After a long week of pressing apples, I was hauling bins to the barn on the tractor when I was struck by the beauty of a sunset to my west and a moon rising to my east.

It's a unique time of year on the farm. We are only open a few more days this year, come enjoy the cider, the food, and the sights while you still can!

Wanted to show a little appreciation for @scottsliquor ! They recently remodeled and it looks stunning! We have loved working with them over the last eight years and it has been a great ride. Tom is a character as I'm sure many of you know, and we definitely feel the love they have for all things local and delicious.

Finished Harvest this week! Later than most years, which allowed some of our longer hanging apples more time to develop flavors!
Come toast the end of the harvest at the tasting room this weekend- We still have many of the single and double varietal ciders available- Limited time! Goose approved!

The lights are on for you at our Tasting Room! We are open through December, so come on over for a visit. Apples, fresh cider, our local food menu featuring toasties, soup and platters, and warm cozy indoor seating if you don’t want to sit outside. This weekend’s weather is looking good for November so take advantage of it and take a hike through the adjoining Cannon River Wilderness Area before or after drifting in to the Tasting Room.

I screenshot what I could but I do encourage you to visit the site and read it for yourself! And yes, this is an article about UK cider but this applies to us here in the States.

A few points Gatens makes that I appreciated in this piece:

1)  Mass-produced cider is a very recent development in cider's centuries-long history.

2)  Bars and Restaurants starting to see potential of cider via its similarity to wine, i.e. significance of fruit varieties and terroir.  Also cider is so incredibly food-friendly!

3) Most real cider takes minimum of two years from harvest to glass and is much more laborious than winemaking since apple need to be ground first.  Apples really put up a fight! And long-aging is REAL & MEANINGFUL!

4)  Bottles of fine cider can be expensive -- but paying $X for a pint of cider that is one-third concentrate and any number of additives isn't a great value.

Welcome November and the start of campfire season at Keepsake! Embrace the brisk outdoor weather with some of our favorite cold weather sippers and winter warmer cocktails, melty delicious toasties, hearty soup and fires to sit around. And if you’re not quite ready for the cooler air, cozy indoor seating is awaiting you. 🔥

While Nate, Tracy & fam are @localfeast in Rochester 11/2 (tickets still available!), the rest of the awesome Keepsake crew will be holding down the fort at the Tasting Room. New weekend hours Saturdays 12-8pm and Sundays 12-6pm (closed Fridays). Make a visit, say hello, and stay awhile!

With the first snow of the year, its funny to think about the cider we are bottling today. Pressed in 2023, aged on locally grown cherries from Welch Woods Farm, and then blended with 2024 harvest- Jewel 2024 spans all seasons and will be here soon!

Thanks to @foodandwine for saying the quiet part loud!

Though we at Keepsake have been singing this tune for the last ten years, the recognition from well-regarded publications like @foodandwine goes a long way in shifting consumer perceptions around Cider and its place in the beverage industry.  Cider in the united states has long been undervalued and underrepresented in our marketplace, especially small-scale & low intervention production.

We celebrate cider for being cider -- but really, cider is just another kind of wine.  Especially when you're just beginning!

It can be really helpful for folks who have only ever had mass-produced, commercial ciders to approach cider as wine first, until they feel more comfortable.  For example, do they enjoy blends of apples or single-variety ciders, dry cider vs. sweeter, unfiltered versus filtered, added sulfites versus no added sulfites?  The process of digging deeper into cider is a mirror image to that of digging deeper into wine.

Along with excerpts from this article, I wanted to highlight a few stores & restaurants that do an exceptional job at showcasing ciders of all kinds on their shelves and on their menus.

Almost all the apples are in, familiar and rare. How bare the orchard looks with the leaves fluttering down with every wind gust! The @cvgraziers sheep can’t wait to get in and do their seasonal clean up once all the apples are out. They are an important part of our orchard health and fertility.

This weekend is your chance to say hi to the sheep, sample and buy our many varieties of apples, and sip on single varietal ciders. An apple and cider lovers dream! See below for weekend details.

🍖Friday, Oct 25, 4 to 9pm - Friday Night Cookout featuring @mnsmokellc, our neighbors from Lonsale. Their tasty bbq options are crowd pleasers and a perfect accompaniment to a flight of Single Varietal flights and bites of apple. @arlo_cristofaro is a soulful local musician, shepherd, and fantastic person playing live from 5-7pm.

🎸 Saturday, Oct 26, 4 to 7pm (open 12-8pm) - 1:30pm: Grab a single varietal flight and catch Nate for an impromptu apple and cider tasting. Live Music “TV & the Bellered Yellers” playing from 4-7pm.

🧘 Sunday, Oct 27 open 12-6pm - **opening early at 10:45am for yoga with @yogawithsarahbb, just show up**. Live music from 2-4pm “Gonzo’s Planet” who plays a mix of funk, soul, R&B, and jazz.

@micks_bottle_shop_on_grand opened in August and we are thrilled to be working with them. Mick and Matt have been hard at work with the new bottle shop but still manage to have fun and share an Underberg and a smile.

They recently brought on a few of our ciders and I will be sampling them at a free tasting this coming Thursday from 5-7pm! This week is still looking beautiful -- the perfect weather to come out, say hi to the new neighbors, sample some fine sparkling ciders, and head home with some bottles!

We are in the thick of harvest here at Keepsake- O

We are in the thick of harvest here at Keepsake- One type of apple has become a staple around here- eating and cidermaking- Russets! Not Potatoes, but apples that have a rough often green, yellow and orange blushed. No, they might not be what most would classify as a beautiful apple- but we think they are gorgeous!
We often make a Single Varietal cider out of Golden Russet, a longtime favorite of ours. Last year we made a Roxbury Russet S.V., which will be released in 2025. And this year we have pressed our first MN 1734 S.V. blend!
We are very excited about this blend and apple- Its a russet from the U of MN apple program! The juice was exquisite and rich. The only problem we have is the name, 1734? For now our working name is The Forgotten Russet. A name we came up with or friend at Badgersett Farm- where these beauties were picked from 50 year old trees (we also grow them here, but on much younger trees)! - nate
