Thanksgiving is one of, if not our favorite, holidays here at Keepsake. Its simple- food, drink, family, and friends + Gratitude.

We love celebrating the year's harvest with produce from all the wonderful farms in our area and, of course, - No other drink pairs better with your meal than cider!

We are grateful to our team here, our partner farmers, the flora, fauna and unseen elements of our orchard and surrounding woods, all the producers of the food and products featured in our store, our visiting artists, our neighbors, our partner stores through out the state, our partner distributor, our fellow craft beverage producers and collaborators, our families, and of course OUR AMAZING CUSTOMERS/GUESTS/FRIENDS!

It takes a big, far reaching "family" to keep small ,family farm, businesses strong and vibrant. Thanks Fam.

And of course, thanks to the farm cats for making life at times very annoying but most of the time very adorable.

Feeling Thankful...

We added a whole extra delivery day because there has been so much demand for our first EVER Farmhouse Red Wine to leave the farm and hit the shelves. THANK YOU!

As Nate has said, we have been quietly making wine for roughly the last five years. This red table wine was the first one that we wanted to share with you fine folks off the farm.

It is a blend of ~50% Frontenac and ~50% Frontenac Gris grown at @crazylegspumpkins in Farmington. The Frontenac was aged in neutral Minnesota oak barrel from @blackswancooperage and the Frontenac Gris was aged in stainless steel. As per usual, this is fruit grown right here in our corner of the world with no sulfite additions, all unfiltered and unfined and only native yeast.

These are my notes blended with input from other people who know much more than me about wine:

It bursts on stage with light, jammy notes reminiscent of beaujolais. As the wine breathes, it gives way to notes of licorice, tarragon, dried fruit, while still maintaining a balance of acidity and body. With each glass, the wine "grows up" and tastes more mature than the previous glass. Each sip has an evolution and the bottle itself is a journey.

When you head to your Thanksgiving fêtes (and beyond) you might consider bringing a bottle of natural Minnesota red that will complement turkey, ham, stuffing, veg, you name it.

We have a lot to be thankful for here in Minnesota. We are thankful for the fruit that we and our partners are able to grow here, especially apples and grapes. We are thankful for the opportunity to turn these into delicious wines and ciders that represents our region of the world that you can be proud of sharing with those nearest and dearest to you.

Special Release!!! We have been making and pouring

Special Release!!! We have been making and pouring wine quietly over the last few years. Many of you have probably tried first vintages here at the farm. Its only been available by the glass.

This weekend we are officially releasing two wines by the bottle. As of now, both are available here at the farm and the Farmhouse Red is at a growing list of shops around the cities. (Hyvee Savage, Cork Dork and McDonalds, South Lyndale (next week))

Visit us this weekend (Last full weekend open of the season) and pick up ciders AND wine for the Thanksgiving Feast!

Farmhouse Red- A dry table wine. No sulfites or any other additions. Spontaneous Ferment. Blend of barrel and tank aged extended skin contact Frontenac and Frontenac Gris grown by Al Full at Crazy Legs Vineyard harvested 2022.

Sparkling Rose'- A dry disgorged and corked sparkling rose' wine. No sulfites or any other additions. Spontaneous Ferment. Just Frontenac Gris with minimal skin contact Frontenac Gris grown by Al Full at Crazy Legs Vineyard harvested 2022. - Only available at farm

Tom is a character as I'm sure many of you know, and we definitely feel the love they have for all things local and delicious.

Finished Harvest this week! Later than most years, which allowed some of our longer hanging apples more time to develop flavors!
Come toast the end of the harvest at the tasting room this weekend- We still have many of the single and double varietal ciders available- Limited time! Goose approved!

The lights are on for you at our Tasting Room! We are open through December, so come on over for a visit. Apples, fresh cider, our local food menu featuring toasties, soup and platters, and warm cozy indoor seating if you don’t want to sit outside. This weekend’s weather is looking good for November so take advantage of it and take a hike through the adjoining Cannon River Wilderness Area before or after drifting in to the Tasting Room.

I screenshot what I could but I do encourage you to visit the site and read it for yourself! And yes, this is an article about UK cider but this applies to us here in the States.

A few points Gatens makes that I appreciated in this piece:

1)  Mass-produced cider is a very recent development in cider's centuries-long history.

2)  Bars and Restaurants starting to see potential of cider via its similarity to wine, i.e. significance of fruit varieties and terroir.  Also cider is so incredibly food-friendly!

3) Most real cider takes minimum of two years from harvest to glass and is much more laborious than winemaking since apple need to be ground first.  Apples really put up a fight! And long-aging is REAL & MEANINGFUL!

4)  Bottles of fine cider can be expensive -- but paying $X for a pint of cider that is one-third concentrate and any number of additives isn't a great value.

Thanks to @foodandwine for saying the quiet part loud!

Though we at Keepsake have been singing this tune for the last ten years, the recognition from well-regarded publications like @foodandwine goes a long way in shifting consumer perceptions around Cider and its place in the beverage industry.  Cider in the united states has long been undervalued and underrepresented in our marketplace, especially small-scale & low intervention production.

We celebrate cider for being cider -- but really, cider is just another kind of wine.  Especially when you're just beginning!

It can be really helpful for folks who have only ever had mass-produced, commercial ciders to approach cider as wine first, until they feel more comfortable.  For example, do they enjoy blends of apples or single-variety ciders, dry cider vs. sweeter, unfiltered versus filtered, added sulfites versus no added sulfites?  The process of digging deeper into cider is a mirror image to that of digging deeper into wine.

Along with excerpts from this article, I wanted to highlight a few stores & restaurants that do an exceptional job at showcasing ciders of all kinds on their shelves and on their menus.

Almost all the apples are in, familiar and rare. How bare the orchard looks with the leaves fluttering down with every wind gust! The @cvgraziers sheep can’t wait to get in and do their seasonal clean up once all the apples are out. They are an important part of our orchard health and fertility.

This weekend is your chance to say hi to the sheep, sample and buy our many varieties of apples, and sip on single varietal ciders. An apple and cider lovers dream! See below for weekend details.

🍖Friday, Oct 25, 4 to 9pm - Friday Night Cookout featuring @mnsmokellc, our neighbors from Lonsale. Their tasty bbq options are crowd pleasers and a perfect accompaniment to a flight of Single Varietal flights and bites of apple. @arlo_cristofaro is a soulful local musician, shepherd, and fantastic person playing live from 5-7pm.

🎸 Saturday, Oct 26, 4 to 7pm (open 12-8pm) - 1:30pm: Grab a single varietal flight and catch Nate for an impromptu apple and cider tasting. Live Music “TV & the Bellered Yellers” playing from 4-7pm.

🧘 Sunday, Oct 27 open 12-6pm - **opening early at 10:45am for yoga with @yogawithsarahbb, just show up**. Live music from 2-4pm “Gonzo’s Planet” who plays a mix of funk, soul, R&B, and jazz.
